Ryan Rios, Kyo Sa

Ryan Rios started his martial arts training in 1990 at age 10 in “Tang Soo Do” under the World Tang Soo Do Association. His first instructor was Master John Auer, who is currently serving as the Region 1 Director for the WTSDA. After 3 years of training, he achieved the rank of 3rd Gup and decided to discontinue martial arts to pursue youth athletics. It was not until he joined the U.S. Air Force and received his 3rd assignment to Kunsan AB, Korea in early 2008 that he began training again. On his second day in country, he noticed a flyer in the base gym adverti

sing Tang Soo Do (Soo Bahk Do) Moo Duk Kwan. He immediately located the instructor Master Choe, Ki Un a Chil Dan (7th Dan) with over 30 years of experience instructing U.S. service members. He immediately began his training with classes lasting 2 hours in duration, 6 days a week. After nearly one year of instruction he was told by his instructor he was eligible to test for his Cho Dan (1st Dan, black belt equivalent). An arrangement was made to have members from the Soo Bahk Do Headquarters gym in Seoul, Korea come down to preside over the test. The Senior Ko Dan Ja (4th dan and above) who led the panel was Master Lee, Dong Kyu Lee current Designee for the Korean Technical Advisory Committee. After completion of the test Mr. Rios was the only candidate to receive a comment from Master Lee “keep training and you could be the best”.

In 2009, Mr. Rios received his 4th assignment in the U.S. Air Force to Hill AFB, Utah. After demonstrating acceptable proficiency in instruction under Master Corrales direct guidance he was awarded his Jo Kyo Instructor certification. Mr. Rios then had the opportunity to instruct at Rowland Hall St. Marks School extended day program. He led nine 1st to 6th grade students through a 10 week introductory Soo Bahk Do course. The program was a complete success and he now comes highly recommended by Rowland extended day staff.

Mr. Rios opened up a school in Clearfield and earned his Kyo Sa (teaching certification) and E Dan (2nd Dan) before being deployed to Korea in November 2011. He embodies one of key elements of Soo Bahk Do “Moo Do Jaseh” and demonstrates this in every class he instructs.

Along with being one of Master Corrales’ top students, Mr. Rios came to Utah with the following Korean lineage:

  • Hwang Kee, Kwan Jang Nim
  • Hong Jong Soo, Sa Bom Nim #10
  • Lee Pal Young, Sa Bom Nim
  • Lee Hon In, Sa Bom Nim
  • Choi Ki Un, Sa Bom Nim
