What we’re working on this cycle

Every four weeks the whole school takes up one philosophical idea, one technical principle and one kick. Beginners and Dan ranks train the same three themes at different depths.

Philosophical emphasis

초심

Cho Shim

Beginning mind — training every technique as if you are learning it for the first time. Tiger Tots explore the same idea through the philosophy of Moo.

Technical emphasis

Contraction & expansion

Maximizing contraction and expansion in preparation for Soo Gi and Jok Gi.

Kick of the month

Yup Hu Ri Gi & Yup Podo Cha Gi

Side hooking kick and side stretch kick — introduced in Week 1, then lunging, spinning and jumping variations through the cycle.

Common questions about our schedule

What days does Wasatch Martial Arts Academy hold classes?

In-person classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at 2375 E 3300 S in Salt Lake City. An online class meets Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.

Can I start partway through a cycle?

Yes. New students join the Kickstart track, which runs alongside every Tuesday and Thursday class and teaches fundamentals from the beginning regardless of where the cycle is. You don’t need to wait for the next month.

Do kids and adults train in the same class?

Yes. The Family Color Belt Class is grouped by rank rather than age, so parents and children train on the same floor in the same hour. Tiger Tots is the one exception — ages 4 to 6 meet separately Tuesday at 5:00 PM.

Do I need experience to join?

No experience is required. Every rank above white belt began where new students begin, and the Kickstart track exists specifically to bring beginners up to speed on stances, blocks, kicks and dojang protocol.

Can I train online if I don’t live in Utah?

Yes. The Wednesday virtual class is open to upper ranks and global affiliate students, and it follows the same curriculum as the in-person classes. Online students can also test for rank by video submission through Digital Dojang, so remote training leads to certified rank progression rather than non-certified study.

How often is belt testing?

Color belt testing is held quarterly and covers basics, forms, one steps, wrist grabs, sparring and breaking. This cycle’s test falls on Thursday, September 10, 2026. Dan testing follows a separate schedule.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable athletic clothing and bare feet. Uniforms are ordered after you decide to enroll, so there’s nothing to buy before a trial class.

Come watch a class

Classes are open to visitors on any Tuesday or Thursday evening. Call ahead and Brian Corrales, Sa Bom will make time to answer your questions before class starts.
